Lower Secondary English
Laying a robust groundwork in Secondary 1 is crucial for your child's academic future. Throughout this year, your child will participate in a diverse set of reading and writing tasks that are more intricate, paving the way for Secondary 2. In this following stage, we will expose them to an assortment of text types and essay formats covering a wide range of subjects, aimed at enhancing their writing precision and comprehension skills. In this program, students will discover the new requirements for key exam components in primary school, such as Essay Writing, Situational Writing, Comprehension, Editing, and Orals. They will face fresh text types and question formats, including summary writing and literary analysis of unseen poetry and prose. Secondary 1 Our curriculum will also introduce wide-ranging topics that touch on current affairs and general knowledge, like Education and the Environment, Global Issues and Social Trends, and the Arts and Humanities. This will help students develop a broader perspective and enhance their abilities in comprehension, summarization, and critical thinking. In our weekly lessons, students will: • learn to articulate their thoughts clearly and smoothly, boosting both their writing and speaking abilities; • recognize different types of questions and grasp what each one requires, which will enhance their reading comprehension; • cultivate their summarization skills by extracting essential information from texts and presenting it in a clear manner; and • hone their time management skills by participating in practice tests. Secondary 2 The English curriculum we offer will engage students with comprehension, summary, and critical thinking exercises centred around current affairs and general knowledge topics like Politics, Economics, Sports, Entertainment, Global Issues, and Social Trends. This will help them build their knowledge and confidence in interpreting and responding to related questions. Furthermore, they will learn to apply different literary techniques to enhance their writing and better articulate their intentions. During our weekly sessions, students will boost their comprehension skills by employing close reading techniques and making informed inferences about the author's intent. They will also sharpen their literary analysis and critical reading abilities by investigating the literary devices and styles present in new poetry and prose. In writing, they will work on enhancing their essays with descriptive language and formulating coherent responses that address the questions effectively. With the introduction of innovative paraphrasing strategies and grammar adjustments, students will further develop their summarization skills. Moreover, they will refine their time management through practice exams in a simulated environment.
