Upper Secondary English
A solid grasp of grammar and vocabulary is essential for students to understand more complex texts and create high-quality writing. Our Secondary 3 English program focuses on enhancing students' language skills, enabling them to write clearly and logically. Additionally, they will engage with a variety of thematic texts to expand their general knowledge and develop critical thinking skills. As they progress to Secondary 4, students will face more challenging texts that require deeper comprehension and more sophisticated writing to express their thoughts succinctly. We will concentrate on refining their language abilities, allowing them to analyse and respond to intricate passages accurately, share their opinions with confidence, and write with clarity and precision. Secondary 3 Students will build their grammar expertise by engaging in grammar drills, editing activities, and sentence reconstruction exercises. They will delve into comprehension, summary, and critical thinking passages covering a wide array of subjects such as Technology, Science, Global Issues, Social Trends, and Inspirational Figures. This exploration will help them gain a global perspective and deepen their knowledge for essay writing. By analysing these different texts, they will see how sentence structure, tone, and punctuation shape meaning. In our weekly lessons, students will express their opinions clearly, demonstrate thoughtful maturity, and choose their words with precision in their writing. They will also improve their summarisation abilities by identifying key points from complex texts and paraphrasing subtle details. By analysing errors and focusing on precise answers, students will enhance their comprehension skills. Additionally, by taking practice tests in a simulated exam environment, they will learn to manage their time more effectively when responding to questions. Secondary 4 Each week, students will participate in practice sessions that mirror the intensity and standards of national exams. These sessions will feature comprehension, summarisation, and critical thinking exercises on various topics, including Society, Technology, Environment, Arts, and Media. This approach aims to broaden students' global perspectives and enrich their knowledge base for essay writing. Additionally, students will refine their writing skills to meet specific task requirements, focusing on Purpose, Audience, Context, and Tone. They will also engage in grammar drills, editing tasks, and sentence reconstruction activities to enhance their grammar proficiency. Weekly lessons will help students develop their critical reading and writing skills. They will apply critical reasoning to evaluate the information and suggestions found in both written and visual texts. Their comprehension abilities will be strengthened through error analysis and precise answering, leading to the creation of clear and logical responses. They will also refine their writing by using techniques like signposting and hedging. Additionally, they will learn to paraphrase effectively and structure their responses to fit the requirements of the questions.
